The United Kingdom is known for one of the best education systems. Not only does it have many highly ranked universities globally, but the courses and interactive teaching methods allow you to improve your personal growth.
In this blog, I would like to share my experiences studying for a Master's in the UK. The first thing that stood out was how short the courses were. Usually, in other countries, such as Indonesia or the United States, we would have the same modules for a semester. However, a module at Loughborough University lasted around two months (more or less). The short module duration was very challenging at first because I had to learn everything quickly, and most modules graded us through only one exam and one group project. It is great when everyone in the team is on the same page and you've received sterling results. However, if we get bad results, we must seek remedial collectively.
Studying in the UK is costly, and I wanted to graduate with honours and make my parents proud. So, I had to push myself and give myself no room for errors. Knowing so much to do in such a short period, I learned to focus and manage my time efficiently. In addition, I had to learn to be more proactive. I had to rewrite my notes, stay up until midnight, and reread and revise all the materials after classes. I also had no hesitation in asking my professors multiple questions. I just had to try my very best. That said, studying abroad is not just purely for academic purposes. The beauty of studying in a rich and culturally diverse city like London was that I had the privilege of mingling with other international students who worked hard and wanted to succeed as much as I did. I had the opportunity to work on group projects and collaborate with different students. Aside from classes and grades, I also learned more about other cultures from my peers and acquired different perspectives on various issues. In a way, that has also helped me in my personal growth because respecting different values and perspectives has made me a more empathic person. Acquiring those qualities has also helped me get internship and employment opportunities because many companies value someone who not only adopts a broad perspective but also who is willing to work together with others despite distinctive backgrounds.
